Further Changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) Scheme
In December 2024, the Government announced reforms to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) scheme, set to roll out throughout 2025. The second phase of these changes will take effect on 10 March 2025, bringing several important updates.
One of the key changes is that accredited employers will no longer be required to meet specific wage thresholds. Instead, the New Zealand minimum wage will apply, and employers must pay the market rate for the job. This change will not affect existing wages in employment agreements.
Additionally, employers will now be able to hire migrants with two years of relevant work experience, instead of the previous requirement of three years. Employers will also need to declare that they have advertised lower-skilled roles with Work and Income and interviewed suitable candidates, keeping evidence of this in case it is requested later. However, they will no longer need to provide evidence of their engagement in their Job Check.
The AEWV duration for new migrants in lower-skilled roles will increase to three years, aligning with the maximum time they can stay in New Zealand on an AEWV. Those currently on two-year visas will be able to apply for an additional year.
Migrants wishing to bring their dependent children to New Zealand will need to earn at least NZD$55,844 per year.
