The 2019 bi-annual Workplace Wellness Report by Southern Cross & Business New Zealand reported that the costs of absence in 2018 was $1.79b and the equivalent of 7.4m lost working days. That was an increase of 12% in lost days compared to the 2016 results.
2020 Holidays (Increasing Sick Leave) Amendment Bill
The government announced in late 2020 its Holidays (Increasing Sick Leave) Amendment Bill proposing to increase sick leave entitlements from 5 to 10 days per year. It has also announced a new subsidy to help workers who are waiting Covid test results.
